Research Peptides in Germany and Austria: Legal? 2026

Written by The P&P Lab | Sep 3, 2026, 6:01:07 AM

Short answer: Neither Germany nor Austria bans research peptides as substances, but both treat any product intended or presented for human use as a medicine. Germany bars private persons from bringing unauthorised medicines in by post (section 73 AMG, enforced by Zoll), and Austria goes further: the BASG calls web-shop "peptides" illegal medicines whose import is banned and warns that buyers can face legal consequences.

Sind Peptide in Deutschland legal? (Are peptides legal in Germany?)

No German law lists research peptides as controlled substances. The question is whether a vial is an Arzneimittel under section 2 of the Arzneimittelgesetz: something intended for use on the body to treat disease, or that can be given to people to restore, correct or influence body functions. Sold as a laboratory reagent, a peptide is a chemical. Sold for use in people, the same peptide is a medicine.

Once it is a medicine, the rest of the AMG follows: section 21 requires a marketing authorisation, section 43 reserves supply to pharmacies, and section 95 makes trading prescription-only medicines outside pharmacies a crime. None of the common research peptides, BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu, Semax or Selank among them, holds a BfArM or EMA authorisation. Zoll adds that the seller's country does not matter; only the German classification counts.

Ist BPC-157 in Deutschland zugelassen? (Is BPC-157 authorised in Germany?)

No. BPC-157 has no marketing authorisation in Germany or anywhere in the EU. No pharmacy can dispense it as a finished medicine and no web shop can lawfully sell it for human use. It can be sold as a research reagent. For athletes, the 2026 WADA Prohibited List covers it under S0.

Peptide im Zoll? (What happens at German customs?)

Prescription status is not the issue; authorisation is. Section 73(1) AMG bans bringing into Germany any medicine that needs an authorisation but lacks one, and Zoll states that private persons may not obtain medicines from abroad by post or courier. A non-EU parcel is cleared by Zoll and any suspected breach goes to the state medicines authority.

Under section 97 AMG, bringing such a medicine in is an administrative offence with a fine of up to 25,000 euro, and the goods are not released. Zoll press releases show this applied to recipients: in 2026 customs officers opened proceedings against parcel recipients after checking foreign post.

Ist ein EU-Paket kein Problem? (Is an EU parcel no problem?)

For customs, correct: a parcel from the Netherlands or Spain is not an import, needs no declaration and pays no duty. The AMG still applies. Zoll's page on intra-EU shipments says private persons may order medicines by post from another member state only from an approved mail-order pharmacy. An EU parcel removes the border check, not the classification question.

Das Anti-Doping-Gesetz (The anti-doping law)

Germany adds a criminal offence for a defined list. Section 2(3) of the Anti-Doping-Gesetz bans acquiring, holding or bringing in a listed substance "in nicht geringer Menge" for doping in sport, with up to three years in prison. Three things must coincide: a listed substance, a quantity above the threshold in the Dopingmittel-Mengen-Verordnung, and a doping purpose.

The list includes growth hormone releasing factors and secretagogues (CJC-1295, sermorelin, ipamorelin, MK-677, GHRP-2, GHRP-6, hexarelin), fragments such as AOD-9604, IGF-1 and MGF, and "Thymosin-beta-4 und seine Derivate, zum Beispiel TB-500". BPC-157, GHK-Cu, Semax, Selank, Epithalon, PT-141, KPV and MOTS-c are not on it.

Österreich: gilt das AWEG auch für EU-Bestellungen? (Austria: does the AWEG cover EU orders?)

Yes. Austria's Arzneiwareneinfuhrgesetz 2010 covers imports from outside the EU and transfers from EEA states. Either needs an import certificate or a notification to the BASG, only pharmacies and licensed companies can apply, and the BASG says private persons cannot file at all. The only private route runs through an Austrian pharmacy.

The BASG notice of 27 May 2026 is blunt. It names pens, injection solutions, nasal sprays and powders for dissolving among the products sold, says the overall context of a web shop shows they are meant for people, calls the "research chemical" label legally irrelevant, bans their sale and import, and warns that buyers as well as sellers must expect legal consequences, such as a criminal report. Under section 21 AWEG an unauthorised import or transfer can be fined and the goods forfeited. Austria is stricter than Germany.

Worauf achten beim Kauf als Reagenz? (What to check when buying a reagent)

A batch report from a named lab you can verify, stock inside the EU, a payment method you can dispute, and a shop without health claims or instructions for use in people.

Where VP comes out ahead: card payments with a dispute route instead of prepayment, measured mass for every listed compound on its own pages, a free reship if a parcel is not delivered in 10 working days, and support in German, English, Spanish and Dutch. Austrian buyers should read the BASG notice above before ordering from anyone. Full comparison: six EU suppliers compared.

Häufige Fragen (FAQ)

Kann ich BPC-157 in Deutschland kaufen? (Can I buy BPC-157 in Germany?)

As a laboratory reagent from an EU supplier, yes; it is not a controlled substance and not on the anti-doping list. As a medicine for human use, no: it has no authorisation, and bringing an unauthorised medicine in by post breaches section 73 AMG.

Ist BPC-157 in Österreich legal? (Is BPC-157 legal in Austria?)

The BASG treats web-shop peptides presented for human use as illegal medicines whose import is banned, and warns that buyers may be reported. It judges the whole shop, not the label.

Was passiert, wenn der Zoll eine Bestellung aus China beschlagnahmt? (What if customs seizes an order from China?)

Zoll keeps the parcel, reports the suspected breach to the state medicines authority and can open proceedings against the recipient: a fine of up to 25,000 euro under section 97 AMG, or a criminal case where smuggling or the anti-doping law applies. The goods are not returned.

Ist GHK-Cu legal? (Is GHK-Cu legal?)

As copper tripeptide-1 it is listed in the EU CosIng database as a cosmetic ingredient. Presented as an injectable it is an unauthorised medicine like any other peptide for human use. Sold as a research reagent it can be bought from EU suppliers.

Und die Schweiz? (What about Switzerland?)

Switzerland is outside the EU, so every parcel is an import. In a joint action announced on 30 June 2026, Swissmedic, the federal customs office and Swiss Sport Integrity ran a targeted campaign on peptide parcels.
